...to the fastest mode of transportation an athlete can achieve without the assistance of gravity or mechanical devices. With speeds of up to 35 miles per hour, and diamond sharp precision, short track speedskating is white hot! How does speedskating stack up to other sports? Combining power and speed with grace and technical skill of figure skating, speedskating brings us to a cool, graceful, action packed world. It's a high energy, family oriented sport that provides a home for the casual skater and the highest-level competitor alike. The Pittsburgh Speedskating Club welcomes new skaters at all levels and ages.
We have coaches for each skill/age group and the ice practices are well organized. During the season we typically have on-ice practices five times per week at the Warrendale Blade Runners, Mt. Lebanon Recreation Center, and the RMU Island Sports Center. As the practice schedule might change from week to week, please check our calendar for the most up-to-date information. if you are new to the sport, please come 30 minutes earlier, so that you will have enough time for orientation. Contact us with foot size information so that we can bring the right size loaner speedskates for you. Hockey or figure skates can also work for an introduction to the sport. Learn-to-speedskate programs are offered at the Mt. Lebanon Recreation Center and RMU Island Sports Center through out the year. Click here for details.
The mandatory protective gear is helmet (bike helmet is ok), gloves and long sleeves. If you have a neck guard, shin guards and/or knee pads, it would be nice to use them too. Make sure to wear sport pants that do not restrict your movements (e.g., jeans are not recommended). Also, thin socks are better than thick ones. We offer loaner speedskates for almost all sizes from child to adult. Please contact us with your size before coming. If you are an inliner who wants to try ice we can arrange to lend you ice blades for your boots.
