On Wednesday October 17th, 2007 two skaters, Cole Krueger and James Rodowsky, achieved qualifying times of 1:32.7 and 1:33.1 at RMU'S Island Sports Center in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. These qualifying times advance them into the elite Americas Cup A division of men's short track speedskating. Krueger, a McMurray Pennsylvania resident and Rodowsky a Maryland resident will now compete in early November in Saratoga Springs New York beside Olympic and World Team skaters.
World Junior Team Member Simon Cho came to RMU Island Sports Center to help set the blistering pace needed to achieve the required times. Every 111meter lap of the 1000 meter distance needed to be skated at under 10 seconds per lap in order to make the time. Heidi Krueger, President of the Pittsburgh Speedskating Club, said " The combination of Cho's attendance and Island Sports' amazing
ice/facility/staff enabled these skaters to perform exactly as they needed to in order to achieve this milestone." Krueger is hoping to not only bring elite level competitions to Island Sports Center in the future, but to use the facilities' Olympic ice surface (required ice size for elite speedskaters) as a training location for the elite skaters who train in the city and region under Korean 2nd National Team skater and coach Kwang-Jae Lee.
